Development of a prototype for energetically active and convertible climate envelopes for a day-care facility in Blankenfelde-Mahlow

In this research project the already existing knowledge about conventional climate envelopes shall be extended with the aim to include active energy generation and -storage, convertibility and noise control.

A climate envelope means an enclosure of a building structure for protection from environmental impacts and improvement of energy usage. In the past, questions regarding structural detailing, physical and economical aspects of conventional climate envelopes have been sufficiently investigated. Increased initial investment costs can be compensated by reduced operating expenses, especially heating costs, due to the greenhouse effect. The envelope provides protection from natural and anthropogenic impacts and therefore creates a new range of possibilities for form and configuration of the interior components.

Further research needs to be conducted regarding the energetic improvement of the envelope. Therefore, possibilities to use the envelope and its enclosed space to actively generate and store solar thermal energy are being investigated to further decrease heating expenses and thus increase economic efficiency. Also, noise controlling properties of the envelope are examined with the aim to minimize noise from the outside on its way to the inside. The third aspect is the convertibility. The missing connection to the surrounding nature has been a negative issue in existing studies. By implementing a movable structure, or displaceable elements respectively, different areas can be opened or closed depending of type of usage and demand to eliminate the artificial border between inside and outside.

The potential of such envelopes is most evident in strongly impacted environments such as areas close to airports, industrial and commercial areas as well as in the vicinity of streets with heavy traffic. The investigations shall finally lead to a prototypic planning of a climate envelope for the children’s day-care facility “Tabaluga” in Blankenfelde-Mahlow.
