We are an active member of the world's largest research project in the buildung and construction sector C³ – Carbon Concrete Composite. In cooperation with more than 160 participants we develope the revolutionary building material Carbon Concrete.

Numerous projects, as well as the latest findings and developments are being presented at this years "9. Carbon- und Textilbetontagen" in Dresden.

Full Fill Homes - final report

Lupe

Guided by the Indian architect Anupama Kundoo and the chair of Conceptual and Structural Design, civil engineering students of the TU-Berlin and Indian craftsmen successfully manufactured the desired “Ferro-Cement-Boxes” for the “Full Fill Homes” project. The experience of the Indian guests and the interest of the students accounted for an intercultural collaboration, which proved to be an enrichment on both sides.

In addition to the boxes for the exhibition at the “Biennale” in Venice, test specimens for further research were produced. Here the formula of the concrete was varied and alternative materials for the reinforcement were used. Finally, different connection methods of the boxes have been examined. We would like to thank Jordahl for the supply of specially developed connectors.

Due to the excellent cooperation of the participants, all challenges which occurred, while dealing with the new composite material, have been be solved. In conclusion, there is potential for further research.

Finally all parts were put together at the “Biennale” in Venice. The whole project „Building Knowledge“ was presented to the audience by the architect Anupama Kundoo. The workshop is the starting point of a long-term cooperation between the Indian architect and the TU-Berlin, in order to further research the construction with Ferro-Cement.

On Saturday, May 28th, the “Architecture Biennale 2016” in Venice has started. The Indian architect Anupama Kundoo presents her project “Building Knowledge”. A central part of the project is “Full Fill Homes”, a small house, which consists of “Ferro-Cement-Boxes”. Under the guidance of the architect and the chair of Conceptual and Structural Design, students and Indian craftsmen have produced some of the thin walled boxes in a workshop at the TU Berlin.

The workshop is the starting point of a long-term cooperation between the Indian architect Anupama Kundoo and the TU-Berlin, in order to further research the construction with Ferro-Cement.

Ferro-Cement is a composite material, which consists of fine grained concrete and wire-mesh reinforcement. However, fiber reinforcement, such as carbon, basalt or natural fibers can be used as well. At our chair we research durability and stability as well as different connection methods of the boxes. We would like to thank Jordahl for the supply of specially developed connectors.

Massive success for lightweight concrete

Holcim Award for cooperation project of the Chair of Conceptual and Structual Design, TU Berlin and Barkow and Leibinger Architects

The design scheme addresses the future of the city of Hamburg as a high-performing and attractive 21st century metropolis. The brief for the Smart Material House required proposals for innovative building techniques and materials for a public housing project in a less developed neighborhood. The units range in size between 90-225sq m and incorporate fast-growth fir decking slabs with pre-fabricated infra-lightweight concrete walls. The lightweight concrete is one-third of the weight of conventional concrete, is self-insulated utilizing recycled foamed glass as an internal aggregate and allows the building to approach a zero-carbon material effect. The walls are embedded with tube conduits to provide conductive heating and cooling via water, triple-glazing improves sound and heat insulation, and the roof is planted with local vegetation.
